Why is this activity useful?

How do native speakers learn vocabulary? When they are young, they hear words and are eventually able to catch the meaning from the context.

This is a very natural and effective way to learn a language.

Learning words from spoken context means that you continue to improve your vocabulary when speaking to people, watching videos or listening to a podcast.

However, catching the meaning from context is not easy. It may require us to hear a word several times before we can really pin down the meaning. That’s the great thing about this activity: for each word you are able to hear it three times in different contexts. That’s why this activity can really sharpen up your listening skills and learning skills, while expanding your vocabulary range.

Tips

1 Listen as many times as you like.

2 Listen to all three clips before answering.

3 Remember that words in English normally have more than one meaning. The meaning of a word in this activity may be different from the meaning that you have heard before.
